writers retreatWriters' Retreat

Since the 1880s, writers and poets have drawn inspiration from the wild beauty and solitude of the North Woods, including Henry David Thoreau, Edward Everett Hale, John Greenleaf Whittier, James Russell Lowell, and Fanny Hardy Eckstorm.  Continuing in this tradition, EPI now sponsors a writers' retreat in the East Branch and Appalachian Trail sanctuaries.

The program is designed to provide both established and emerging writers with the opportunity to focus on their craft in a secluded wilderness environment. Several rustic and simply furnished cabins, each located in a unique setting within the sanctuary, are available for this purpose for varying lengths of stay from one week to 10 days.

  • Sandy Stream Cabin. Located along Sandy Stream with a view of Mount Katahdin, East Branch Sanctuary
  • Goodyear Cabin. Located on the East Branch of the Penobscot River, East Branch Sanctuary
  • Lunksoos Camps. One of four cabins located on the East Branch of the Penobscot River, East Branch Sanctuary
  • Big Wilson Cabin. Located along Big Wilson Stream, Appalachian Trail Sanctuary
  • Weymouth Cabin. Accessible from the Appalachian Trail, Appalachian Trail Sanctuary

To participate in the program, interested writers need to submit an application, writing samples and a short essay on their interest in and objectives for this stay. Although not required, submission of a writing piece or pieces to EPI after the retreat would be appreciated.

All travel and board costs are covered by EPI. For more information and an application:
